Sixteen Tons by Tennessee Ernie Ford became the fastest selling record in American history - but not for long. The date - January 26.

Teddy boys and black people were banned from entering a ballroom in Wolverhampton.

Where was all the British talent? On January 24 the latest charts for the UK showed that every slot from one to 10 was occupied by an American artist.

Rock Island Line sold 150,000 copies in 10 days after going on sale in America in March.

Donegan achieves a top 10 hit in America in April.
