*American space craft launched with two monkeys as passengers.
*Guy Trebert arrested in Paris - he was the first criminal cought through the use of an identikit picture.
*Alabama authorities banned a children's book that promoted inter-racial marriages between rabbits.
*Report on Munich air disaster which killed some of Manchester United's famous "Busby Babes" blamed ice on the wings for the crash.
*Winston Churchill's house burgled - 10,000 was stolen.
*Picasso painting sold for 55,000 - a world record at the time.
*June 1 saw first broadcast of Jukebox Jury by the BBC. Host was David Jacobs.
*TV presenter Robin Day was chosen as the Liberal candidate for Hereford.
*Although aged 85 Winston Churchill said he would continue to run for Parliament.
*Dolly Parton, then just 13, released her first single - "Puppy Love."
*A great white shark which weighed over 1,200kg was the largest fish ever caught with a rod.
*Cliff Richard and The Drifters began an engagement at the Chiswick Empire. Also on the bill - Des O'Connor.
*Buddy Holly played his last show - at the Surf Ballroom, Clear Lake, Iowa. He was later killed in an air crash while on his way to Fargo. Also killed were The Big Bopper and Ritchie Valens.
*The Barbie Doll was launched in America. She wore a zebra-striped swimsuit.
*Fidel Castro became President of Cuba.
*The Queen's head appeared on a banknote for the first time when the 10 note was re-introduced.
*The Archbishop of Canterbury claimed that adultery ought to be a criminal offence.
*Russia launched Luna 1. It became the first space craft to pass close to the moon.
*Obesity became more of a problem in Britain than malnutition for the first time.
