*Britain exploded her first thermo-nuclear bomb in the megaton range on Christmas Island in the Central Pacific.
*Elvis Presley rushed to hospital with chest pains after swallowing the porcelain cap from his front teeth. It became lodged in his lung. Also that year Elvis bought his Graceland mansion with its 23 rooms for $102,000.

*The British Government announced it would end National Service.
*Elizabeth Taylor married Mike Todd.
*Buddy Holly recorded his first hit single - That'll Be The Day.
*The Russian dog Laika became the first creature in space aboard Sputnik 11. She did not survive the journey. Laika was a stray which had been picked up on the streets of Moscow.
*The Queen abolished the court presentation of debutantes.
*Dwight Eisenhower suffered a mild stroke which impaired his speech.
*The best dressed woman of the year was Princess Grace of Monaco. Following were Audrey Hepburn and Marlene Dietrich.
*The Post Office introduced detector vans to crack down on licence dodging.
*Anthony Eden resigned as Prime Minister because of ill-health. He was replaced by Harold Macmillan.
*Elvis Presley recorded All Shook Up.
*Prince Charles had his first day at prep school.
